Bob Barry, Sr. was on the road to becoming an Oklahoma journalism legend back when he first began working at KOMA radio and playing the drums in his high school's dance band.
A graduate from Classen High School in Oklahoma City, Barry began his broadcast career at KNOR radio in 1955 hosting, "Uncle Bob's Wake Up Jamboree". Majoring in business from the University of Oklahoma, he played freshman baseball and joined the Air Force for four years. His first sports job came in 1956 as the announcer for Norman High School football and basketball.
In 1961, Bob was picked by OU's Bud Wilkinson to be the voice of the Sooners. Five years later, he joined the team at WKY-TV (now KFOR) in Oklahoma City, serving as the station's sports director for 26 years. His son, Bob Barry, Jr., joined the team in 1980.
During his time at KFOR, Barry, Sr., was the play-by-play voice of OU football for 12 years before changing venues and becoming the play-by-play for Oklahoma State University for 18 years. Barry returned to OU in 1990.
He has been named Oklahoma Sportscaster of the Year 15 times and inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 1998. He also received the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Pioneer Award in 1993.
Barry has served on the board of directors of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and is a two-time president of the Norman rotary club.
