Gil Morgan, a native of Wewoka, Oklahoma who now calls Edmond home, never practiced in the field of optometry after receiving a doctorate degree. After earning $7 million on the PGA and Seniors Tour, other golfers on tour wished he had.
Morgan has made the cut in all 16 events he has played, with 12 Top 10 finishes including five titles. Since joining the senior tour in 1997, Morgan has conquered course after course. After winning seven titles last year, the SPGA named him "Rookie of the Year".
Dr. Gil Morgan joined the professional tour in 1972 at the young age of 25. He had just earned his doctorate degree from Southern College of Optometry, but opted for birdies rather than bifocals. It took five years to win his first PGA title, but after tasting victory at the B.C. Open in 1977, he followed with wins at the 1978 Glen Campbell-L.A. Open and the World Series of Golf.
In 1979, besides winning the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic, Morgan was selected to represent the United States in the Ryder Cup. In all, "The Dr." won seven titles and netted over $5 million on the PGA tour.
Always a goodwill ambassador for the state of Oklahoma, his hometown course in Wewoka has named their city course the Dr. Gil Morgan Municipal Golf Course in his honor. Morgan has accomplished nine holes in one, something that no other golfer has ever done. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1982.
