L. Dale Mitchell

Mitchell was an outstanding baseball player at the University of Oklahoma and in the major leagues with the Cleveland Indians and the Brooklyn Dodgers. A native of Colony, Oklahoma, he was living in Tulsa when he died in 1987.

Mitchell holds the record for the highest batting average in OU history at .507 and the Sooners' baseball stadium is named after him. During his 10-year major league career, his batting average was .312 and amazingly, he struck out only 119 times in 3,984 at bats.

A three-time All-Star, he led the American League with 203 hits and 23 triples in 1949. Mitchell's lifetime batting average ranks behind only the Waner brothers among Oklahomans who played major league baseball.
