Sean O'Grady holds the distinction of being the only world champion boxer from Oklahoma. In 1975, after a brief amateur boxing career, he turned professional at age 15.
Trained, promoted, and managed by his father, Pat O'Grady, the duo was recognized in the world of boxing for their eight-year career record of 81 wins, five losses, with 70 wins by knockout. O'Grady is acknowledged for placing Oklahoma on the boxing map.
He won the United States Boxing Association lightweight title in 1980 and the World Boxing Association lightweight championship title in 1981. The WBA threatened to strip O'Grady of his title if he did not defend against Claude Noel, the number one contender. Sean objected and the title was taken. His father formed the World Athletic Association with his son as the lightweight champion, but he lost the title in a two-round knockout.
Retired from boxing in 1983 with an overall record of 81-6. O'Grady is a member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame. He has continued his boxing career as a television analyst for networks such as, ESPN, CBS, USA and FOX.
Sean resides in Edmond and works in commercial real estate.
