Known for his accomplishments, ability and integrity, Steve Largent was an All-American football player from Tulsa University who would spend 14 seasons in the NFL breaking records and making sports history.
Largent began at Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City as a catcher on a star-studded baseball team that included future major league pitcher Bob Shirley and NFL quarterback Pat Ryan. He earned All-State honors and surprised most of his friends by accepting a football scholarship instead of pursuing a very promising career in baseball.
He suited up with the Golden Hurricanes of TU in 1972. He lead the nation in touchdown catches in 1974 and 1975 with 14 each year, and was named AP second team All-American in 1975. His college career totals were 126 catches for 2,385 yards and 32 touchdowns. He was a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection and participated in the Senior Bowl.
He was selected in the fourth round by the Houston Oilers, who later cut him from the team. The Oilers then recalled Largent and promptly traded him to Seattle for an eight round draft pick, Jerry Rhome. Largent remained with the Seattle Seahawks his entire 14-year pro career.
Largent concluded his NFL career with league records for receptions (819); yards by a receiver (13,089); touchdown passes (100); consecutive games with a reception (177); 50-catch seasons (10); and 1,000 yard seasons (8). He became only the second person in NFL history to own career history records in receptions, yards and touchdowns all at the same time, joining Green Bay's Don Hutson (1945).
He also is known for his countless civic contributions off the turf with such organizations as United Cerebral Palsy, March of Dimes and the Spina Bifida Foundation. He was named NFL's Man of Year in 1988 for having an outstanding balance in civic and professional responsibilities.
Largent played his last pro football game in 1989. His records have since been broken, although he remains in the number two spot in catches, yards and touchdown receptions.
